Chasing Desert Sunrises and Sunsets
In the fall of 1998 I moved from the Northeast USA to the Phoenix AZ area to pursue a dramatic lifestyle change. After visiting many times since the early 1980s, I had become smitten by the crisp desert sunlight, year-round hiking & outdoor recreation opportunities, and the epic scale and grandeur of the landscapes in Arizona and the Southwest in general. I have shared with many of my friends and family that I have made my fair share of bad or regrettable decisions over the years. But, moving to Arizona was not one of them.
My Photography Journey:
I moved to North Scottsdale in 2004 that is when I started exploring the world of photography as a hobby. It eventually evolved into a professional side business about 10 years ago when I started capturing and selling stock Arizona desert landscape images including a lot of desert sunrise and sunset scenes. Its not much of a secret, but the Sonoran desert is world renowned for producing some of most stunning and colorful sunrises and sunsets.
The city of Scottsdale is blessed with one of the best and most extensive urban hiking trail systems in the USA. The centerpiece being the 30,000 acre McDowell Sonoran desert preserve located primarily in North Scottsdale. Its along the hiking and mountain biking trails in this vast desert preserve where I have captured most of the Arizona sunrises and sunsets that I sell as wall art and digital downloads. Some of my favorite trailheads that I shoot photography in Scottsdale include Pinnacle Peak, Tom’s Thumb, Brown’s Ranch, and Gateway.
Its not always easy being a photographer that shoots a lot of sunrises and sunsets, and some days it’s a complete bust out in field. But over the years I have learned a lot of techniques, including predicting prime shooting days, and developed a personal style that makes the effort very fulfilling- especially when things come together in those magic and fleeting moments.
