Will There Be an Arizona Wildflower Super Bloom In 2026?
AZ Wildflower Super Bloom in 2026?
If you’ve lived in the Phoenix Arizona metro area long enough, you know we love a good wildflower season — and this year, I feel there’s reason to be cautiously optimistic that we will see a robust wildflower season or possibly even a super bloom during Spring of 2026!
After record-breaking rains in the fall of 2025, the Sonoran desert around Arizona received an unusually generous drenching. In fact, it was the wettest fall season recorded in Arizona in over 100 years! We received so much rain during the fall of 2025 that the desert in the Phoenix area turned unseasonably green with even some wildflowers blooming which is highly unusual. I got to see and experience this natural phenomena first hand as a photographer who visits the Tonto National forest near Mesa often to photograph and film the Salt River wild horses. During my outings in the Tonto I saw lots of wildflowers blooming in the desert hills and open desert even into mid December. See photo below.
Anyway, according to my research these heavy fall rains bode extremely well for wildflowers, because many of the species that make up a super bloom — like Mexican poppies and lupine respond best when seeds are primed with moisture and cool soil temperatures. Those conditions help seeds germinate and seedlings take root before the heat of spring arrives.
Still, even with excellent fall rain, a true super bloom will likely depends on a few key things:
Decent Winter rains: Periodic showers throughout the winter will help nurture young plants. A really strong winter drenching or two in late February or early March could definitely help.
Spring temperatures: Warm days with cool nights often bring out the brightest and longest displays.
That said, based on what we’ve seen already — especially after the unusually wet fall — there’s real potential for a vivid and widespread wildflower season in early 2026. I will be watching the forecasts and will provide updates on this blog post and my American Southwest Youtube channel when when I can. My gut is by mid to late February I could have a very good sense of the wildflower bloom potential in the Spring of 2026.
Stay tuned, get outside when spring arrives, and let’s hope this rainy start leads to a bloom worth remembering!
2026 Super Bloom Prediction Updates:
1/14-2026: Off To A Good Start! Well, we are already off to a good start. The Tonto National forest near Mesa AZ and Saguaro lake received nearly a half inch of rain last week. The desert is still very green right now which is very unusual for this time of year. My gut is if we get 1 or 2 more major rain events before the end of February it will bode extremely well for at a minimum an above average wildflower season this Spring.
2/8/2026: Poppies Starting To Bloom! I was out this morning filming in the Tonto National Forest and I can report that in various locations pockets of Gold Mexican Poppies are already starting to appear and bloom along the Beeline Highway and Bush Highway. In my experience this is very early in the season to see this! Its usually late February when you start to see these iconic Arizona desert wildflowers start to bloom. Watch video report below from 2/9/2026 !
2/17/2026: Good Rain Event! It looks like over 1/4 of an inch of rain fell in the Tonto National forest last night from a storm moving through Arizona. This is very good news for seeing a very robust Wildflower bloom inMarch!
3/10/2026: Disappointing Bloom So Far… Unfortunately, with only a few light rain events since late February, and some unusualy warm weather spells, the wildflower bloom has so far been below average in my personal observations in an around the Tonto National Forest near Mesa, AZ. To be clear I am seeing some good patches of Mexican Poppies blooming in the late morning along highway 87 (Beeline Highway) , but nothing approaching a robust or super bloom season. Normally some of the Valleys along Bush Highway towards Saguaro lake would have significant bloom activity at this point, but im just not seeing that. I can report that I am seeing my Wild Horses friends along the highway grazing, as well as up in the hills and alond the Salt river in certain locations..
