As a professional photographer and videographer who has spent years over 20 years photographing and filming throughout Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon, I've had the opportunity to capture these dramatic winter conditions firsthand.

Snow in Sedona: A Different Side of Arizona
Snow in Sedona is one of those weather events that can completely change the character of the landscape.
The combination of falling snow, red rock sandstone formations, pine and deciduous forests, historic structures and flowing Oak Creek creates visually striking footage that is very different from the typical images associated with the Arizona desert.
From a photographer's perspective, some of the most interesting scenes occur while the snow is actively falling. Snowflakes moving through the frame can add depth and atmosphere, while a fresh layer of snow can soften trails, rocks, trees and buildings. Shooting at high shutter speeds like 60 FPS also gives me the option to slow the footage down in post processing to give the falling snow scenes a more dreamy or ethereal atmosphere or vibe.

A Photographer's Perspective on Snowy Sedona
After spending years photographing and filming Sedona, I have found that winter weather can reveal a side of the area that isn't always represented in typical Arizona photography.
When snow begins falling, the landscape changes quickly. Familiar locations can take on a completely different appearance, and even well-known red rock formations can look dramatically different when surrounded by snow-covered trees and trails.
For me, these conditions are particularly interesting because they combine several elements that are visually distinctive to Sedona: red rock, snow, forest, water, historic structures and changing winter weather.
Rather than simply documenting snow on the ground, I look for scenes that show the interaction between the weather and the landscape—snow actively falling through trees, accumulating on rocks and structures, covering trails, and changing the appearance of familiar Sedona locations.
